Energy Efficiency

Groton Electric is known for its historically low public utility rates.  In 2013 working with insulation and HVAC partners  we set out to lower our energy consumption and take advantage of Groton's low rates.

Two cold climate Heat Pumps and dense packed cellulose insulation resulted in over a 50% reduction in energy costs from 2010 (when oil was $3.26 / gallon)!

Even better,  heat pumps dehumidify in the summer and are much less costly to run than traditional AC units.  In the summer and winter the attic never gets more than a few degrees warmer or colder than our temperature setting.  The space is great to store those old vinyl LP's you can't seem to part with!

With Groton's 5/50 time of use rates we've enjoyed additional savings and optimized our thermostats to take advantage of the rate program.

Lastly, we haven't stopped there.  Since that first step we've also replaced all the windows and sliders with energy efficient double-insulated solar low-E glass technology.  The garage ceiling insulation has also been upgraded.
